{Flashback Friday} - Raymor Capri

Last week I shared a snippet of all of the vintage magazines I purchased at an estate sale. I said I would share some of the ads in them. As promised, I am sharing an image for a party chicken salad. When I saw the ad I was overcome with excitement, not because I like chicken salad but because I LOVE Raymor Capri.

This place setting is made up of Raymor Capri items, a design line by Michael Lax for Hyalyn.

Yikes! Since I missed posting last week I have a backlog of items to share with you. Trust me, I'm not complaining because the thrifting has finally picked up in my neck of the woods. I was beginning to think that 2011 was an anomaly and that my thrift luck had just about run out. Boy was I wrong.

For some reason or another, there haven't been many estate sales in my area. Whether it was because of a holiday weekend or because some of the local companies just don't have clients. I don't know. However, this item is from an estate sale as are the next two. This is a beautiful Finnish glass vase designed by Tamara Aladin.

I love these mod wire/ mesh racks. I don't know if it's the simplicity of the design that I like but what I do know is that if I see one, I more oft than not have to pick it up.

I found this great little paper clip letter holder at the same estate. It's kitschy, mod and fantastic.

On my way back from the estate sale I passed by a thrift that I hadn't been to in several months. I usually don't have much luck at this particular one but this time I did. I found this stunning woodblock print by Shodo Kawarazaki. It has several marks in the margins and Bryan from Alamodern was kind enough to help decipher some of them. There are marks from the publisher, the date, as well as the artist's name.

In keeping with the Japanese theme, I found this cute Japanese Cedar bear figurine. He is also signed on one side. I know I referred to this figurine as a bear but I am wondering if this creature has a special meaning because I've seen several similar iterations. Anyone know?

This was one of last week's finds but it has a story that goes along with it. I was doing a usual thrift loop of mine (one I hadn't done in a while because of a transitional car situation) and I stopped by a thrift that is typically hit or miss. I've been at this thrift when they bring out carts of new stuff and the 'regulars' that usually sit by the back waiting for said carts are surely a sight. I stay away from the carts while they push, pull, and trip over each other. This day was no exception. I was in one of the aisles and the commotion had died down so I started making my way to them and then I saw the bowl. My heart sank. It was still sitting there unclaimed and just as I was about to reach for it a little girl put her hand on it to show to her mom. "Dangit", I thought, I just missed out on this bowl by a few seconds! But then, like music to my ears, the mom told her not to touch it and leave it behind. So goes the story of my first Finel bowl find in the wild. I hesitated to put it in the shop and I thought it would sit a bit longer but I listed it and it sold within a couple of days. Goodbye beautiful bowl.

Another first for me is this Ultima Thule sugar bowl. I've always coveted the Ultima Thule finds from other thrifters and for once I found my own! Can you believe this is the first time I've found one of these in the wild?

Lastly, I am finally sharing a piece that I collect. I purchased it from another reseller because sometimes that's what you have to do.

It's a set of salad utensils designed by Michael Lax for Raymor Capri. They are a combination of porcelain and walnut. They are 14" long! It's hard to determine the scale without any objects paired with it so...

I decided to show you how big the ceramic portions are by setting one of my Toikka birds in it. They're huge and I find the scale to be a bit garish but it is what it is. Scale is always a bit tricky when you just have online pictures for reference.

So is everyone having a good week? I hope so! It's been a bit of a roller-coaster for me but it's having a much better ending than beginning.
I haven't kept it a secret that my local thrifts haven't been abundant. A lot of my latest finds have been through estate sales and even from picking antique malls. I've even started picking Etsy! While I find myself telling a lot of sellers what they have there are some things that I just have to have.

My very first Etsy pick is this lovely platter in the Raymor Capri line by Michael Lax. I found my very first piece from this line when I had just started thrifting in SoCal. I picked it up and considered the price of $2.99. It was a divided bowl that I just didn't need at the time, but it was so beautiful! Luckily the boy is much better at just going for things and insisted that I get it. There was a fellow thrifter stalking me hoping I would put it down. I didn't. I paid quite a bit more for this one but I don't often come across these pieces.

Last weekend I was on my way to a swap meet and as soon as I got off of the freeway there was a loud tapping sound that lasted for a few seconds. It scared the crap out of me! Not long after, a maintenance light came on in my car. Uh oh. Just the day before the same light had come up and it turned out to be low air pressure in one of my tires. Since I had corrected the problem the day before (or so I thought) this shouldn't have happened. I called the boy in a panic, after all of my driving was I not going to be able to walk through the swap meet. These are life altering decisions here! (kidding)

He told me to relax, that I'd be able to walk around for a bit but that I should go to the nearest dealer. He thought they may have mounted the tire wrong. As I walked around the swap meet I couldn't help but worry about being stranded in the parking lot. I hurriedly walked around and then decided enough was enough and started walking back. Luckily I spotted a red Dansk platter that caught my eye and stopped for a second. I knelt down and saw this funny little scale next to it. I had seen it before on Alamodern's site and so I knew it was special. I was playing around with it and thought it was broken at first but it turns out it is just ingeniously designed! (The clear part rotates freely so that you can weight items in kg or lb)

So my trip to the swap meet wasn't a total miss after all. I went to the nearest dealer and their service center was closed! While there I took another look at the tire and noticed a nail sticking out on the inside part of the tire. I put some air in the tire and crossed my fingers that I'd make it home, taking all of the side streets of course.

Luckily I have a handy dandy Mister who has some (tire plugs)? and look at what he took out of the tire! Does that count as a find? If it does I'd rather not find those things in my tire again. ;)

Later in the week I went on my usual weekly route and came back empty handed. I visited 8 thrifts and all I got was an emptier gas tank. That's been the story for the past few weeks. It happens.

Eva Zeisel- Teapot in Museum White for Castleton

Yesterday, I decided to try my luck at another usual thrift. Different than the ones from my 'loop' and look at what I found. I couldn't believe my eyes and must have looked stunned 'cause I didn't move, kind of like a tiger ready to pounce. Since I found a nice set from this line last month the curves were as clear as day in my mind. The lid, the handle, the spout and the color. I picked it up and I turned it over, no marks. That's probably why it was still there. I'm sure if it had a floral pattern it would've been gone!

I was ecstatic, my heart was racing and as if it weren't enough I went through the rest of the store looking for more. In the end she was the only one, but boy was she a good one! Finding a lot of these pieces recently only makes me wonder if I've overlooked them in the past. I probably have. It's the nature of the game and one can only look forward.

Hey thrifty buds, I'm going to keep it short and sweet this week. I didn't find much this week but that's how it is, some weeks are good, some not so much. That's what makes the thrill of the hunt stronger for next week! Also, sometimes you just don't find the time to photograph some of your latest catches.

A find that I was really stoked about is this Raymor Capri piece designed by Michael Lax. It reminds me of one of my very first thrift hunts here in SoCal. I had just discovered by inclination towards MCM objects and found a divided dish in this same line. I stumbled upon it and heavily considered it even though it was less than $5. There was another thrifter eyeing me and secretly hoping that I would set it down. He was watching my every move but alas I brought it home. I did all kinds of searches for porcelain and walnut combos but didn't have much luck. It took me about a year to learn who it was designed by and it was by chance. I think I was doing research for something else. Fast forward a couple of years to my second piece from this line. I saw it at the thrift and paid a fair price for it, it certainly wasn't a giveaway but this is a line that is going to grace my home for years to come. I love white dishes and I love Black Walnut, bring the two together and I'm head over heels!

This little guy is missing a couple of pieces but I recognized the line right away. It is a Lagardo Tackett for Schmid sugar container. This originally had a rattan handle that looped around the little 'shrek' ears. It is also missing the little spoon but it was half off! It's awfully hard to find Lagardo Tackett goodies in my 'hood.
