Hunted:: Gathered: 04/14/12

Welcome back fellow thrifters and collectors! I hope your thrifting adventures have been more plentiful than mine. The thrifts seem to have been wiped out of a lot of goodies so I've resorted to hunting in Antique malls. Sometimes you can find hidden gems so you must never count them out.

This first piece I picked up because I liked the look of it and thought it would be a good decorator piece. It was also on sale at a local antique mall. I knew it was a vintage spin top but what I didn't know is that it is a Folk Japanese spin top likely dating to the 1950's. I've seen it described as a Sasebo Goma Koma fighting wood top. It's a hefty piece with loads of charm.

This next piece was my lonely yield from my usually fruitful estate sale company. I am not complaining though because I have the lone teak tray that this can go with. It was designed by Vivianna Torun for Dansk. The condition wasn't great but I conditioned the wooden part of the handle with a food-safe conditioner and now its good to go.

Here is the piece it matches. I love the subtle detail on the tray. These will be in the shop soon.

Lookie loo, I found another one of these Marimekko bags that were done for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. I have a little giveaway in mind for when I hit 100 followers and this may just be one of the items! It'll probably be a while before I hit 100 though...

Lastly, I couldn't resist this little family of ducks. They strongly resemble the Hans Bolling family of ducks except that these are made of Japanese Cedar, have glass or plastic eyes and are much smaller! They are really cute though and are already in the shop.

Have a great weekend and be sure to share your goodies at Selena's and Sophie's!

  1. Nice finds - that Japanese wooden top is pretty cool! Oh the ducks remind me of the Witco stuff.. don't know much about those though.

    1. For some reason I have a mental block for Witco,I can never remember their name in the heat of the moment. They are similar but these ducks have a much finer grain and are pretty smoothly carved.

  4. Very nice finds fellow antique mall picker :) I am hoping that this week will be different, wish you lots of luck out there. The ducks are my favorite too, I am surprised they are still in the store. I don't give them more than a week before they fly out.

    1. Haha! I hope you had a good week, the thrifts have not picked up and antique mall picking can get pricey :)This week has been slower at the shop (as in no sales!) but was a bad week all around.

  5. there's ups and downs in gathering, isn't there? i myself discover my harvest may well depend upon shifting moods inside me too. very funny.

you're a matchmaker, made in heaven, baby. i've enjoyed my trip over to yours. and your shop is looking just like this place here : inviting, sparkling, beautiful.

on the 100 subject... let's see who hits it first? it's going slow here, but sometimes all of a sudden, there seems to be spurt. beats me! ha ha ha...

  6. The thrifts have been a bit dry for me too but luckily it's rummage sale season again here in Chicago. I hunt at antique malls while traveling and manage to find some well priced pieces too. I love the color & shape of the top and of course the wee duck family is adorable!

    1. I haven't been going to rummage sales or garage sales like I used to, I really should pick it back up. It's fun to find something at an antique mall every now and again but it can get a bit pricy.

    1. thanks much! The top is not something I usually look for but it was too neat to pass up. About those ducks, well, I'd been stalking those for weeks and caved in. ;)

  9. How great that you found a lonely piece to match with your lone item.
Sometimes it is those smaller finds that are truly rewarding.

Your finds would be very unusual in my area.

    1. It is very rewarding indeed! I also find it funny when people give me odd looks for picking up an old cheese plane ;) As far as the finds, I go to so many places to find them. Sometimes I'm lucky, sometimes I'm not. I think that depending on where you are, it can all be about timing.

  10. Hi, I am in love with your duck family. I recently thrifted a Danish monkey, one of my best finds to date.
Trying to add myself as one of your blog friends to no avail, will try again later. I will carry on reading whilst I wait for the PC gremlins to bugger off!
